Mini Chopped Cheese Sandwich

Originating from New York City, the famous Chopped Cheese Sandwich is a nice switch up to a regular “smegular” burger. If you keep up with my blog or with me on social media, you know I grew up in the Metro Chicagoland area. I used to purchase this sandwich all the time from a local restaurant in the neighborhood. We called them Chopped Steak Sandwiches, but they are made the same way as the Chopped Cheese. If you like savory Cheese Burgers with all the trimmings, this recipe is for you. It’s Fantastic!

I also wanted to make sure this recipe was party ready, So I transformed this recipe into a Mini Chopped Cheese Sandwich. All you have to do is slice it in threes and your done, done!

How do you make it?

First make your burger sauce. The sauce includes ketchup, mayo, mustard, soy sauce, hot sauce, and Worchesisire sauce. Prep your vegetable toppings. For these Mini Chopped Cheese Sandwiches, I use tomatoes, onions, dill pickles, and shredded lettuce as trimmings. Season and pan sear the Angus Beef Patties in a nonstick skillet. Then chop the patties with a pastry cutter or regular knife. While the meat is still in the skillet, add a few American or Mild Cheddar Cheese slices and cover with a lid. I prefer Mild Cheddar, but use whatever cheese you like.

What makes this recipe special is the use of a Hero/Hoagie Roll instead of a bun. Toast the Hero Rolls in butter on the stovetop. Once it’s finished, add the burger sauce to the bottom half of the roll. Then scoop the beef meat onto the bun. Add the vegetable toppings, more sauce., fold the sandwich together, and slice it into 3 pieces with a knife. Serve on a party platter and enjoy.

Tips & Tricks!

You can substitute the Angus Beef Patty for Ground Beef. That’s what I used when creating the content for this blog post. Trust me, you can’t tell the difference in taste either way. I like to cook my beef meat in my Cast Iron Skillet. If you need a good Cast Iron Skillet, click the link and check out the one I recommend.
